How Do They Work?
Untreated waste water from a property flows into the septic tank. Solids separate from the liquids where some of the solids will float to the top of the tank to form a scum layer. Heavier solids, such as human, bathroom and kitchen wastes, settle to the bottom of the tank as sludge.
Septic Tank Emptying
Baffles built into the tank stop the waste from moving past the outlet of the tank. Therefore, septic tanks need to be pumped out annually, or the sludge and scum layers need to be measured at least once per year to avoid solids overflowing into the soil treatment system.
